You are right, that's the case for the normal operation.
However, for the lenses witout SDM, modern bodies are using the
screw driver.
So, in principle, if the SDM is disabled in the lens, the camera
may be fooled to think that the lens never had an SDM, and would use the
screw-driven AF.
