And, in fact, I have seen posts on PentaxForums about changing the
programming of an SDM lens to use the screw-drive instead, so this is
a plausible "repair."

But with my lenses (a bunch of screw-drive lenses and the SDM DA*
300), it is very easy to hear the difference between the two
mechanisms. The screw-drive is easily audible, while the SDM is nearly
silent.
