I had never been able to do that.
I remember the trick was described by someone from Russia...
Still, if you have a recent body or an older body with current
firmware, only the SDM can be used.
If the SDM "on the lens" is not working; it can not autofocus; there
is no fall back to the surviving and mechanically fully functional
screw driven mechanism.

By the way, my lens is still waiting to be repaired (second time); its
SDM is at fault again (after a trauma!).
