Since you are hiking you probably place an emphasis on keeping things light I can't quite bring myself to not bring a backup. But the discussion on this thread is talking me away from some of the heaviest stuff I was planning on bringing...

I've crossed the 135-400 off the list (too heavy and not likely to be used) and also the 70-200 f2.8 (more or less redundant with the 70-200 f4-5.6). I may as well skip bringing film and stick with digital.

I'm thinking of a "field bag" (as Christine defined it) with a K-3, IR converted K10d, DA17-70, Takumar F 70-200 and DFA100mm macro. This fits comfortably into a Tamrac shoulder bag (it's very old but essentially like their current System 3 bag.)

The "tech bag" will be smaller and have the K-5, DA 16-50 and K mount adapter for the Q. That will be small enough to fit under a car seat or in a cubby somewhere.

Lastly the Q kit for days when I want something very small and light.

I may never use the K5, DA 16-50 f4 or Q kit, but combined they will take up less room in the car than a pair of spare shoes.

I'm just winding down my UK trip hiking through Yorkshire. I took my light travel kit: K5, DA 12-24, DA* 16-50 and DA-L 55-300, plus a Manfrotto Mountaineer carbon fibre tripod and a Sigma +1.6 diopter achromatic close-up attachment for "macro" work. No backup body. All this kit has proven so dead reliable through years of atrocious outdoor conditions that I felt confident without bringing more (actually, the DA-L 55-300 is relatively new but I thought I'd risk it).

Last year in Italy I brought a similar kit but with a backup body.
