When you travel - do you carry backup
gear or just trust to fate that everything will work?

What do you do when you travel?
interesting to read about what people take on trips; just piling on:
i take one K-5 body (my backup body is my iPhone); i also bring two
batteries and a charger, or just three charged batteries on shorter trips
the lenses i used to carry were
A 50/1.7
FA 28/2.8
maybe Sigma EX 105/2.8 Macro _or_ DA 50-200 WR
for some reason i've "graduated" to modern lenses, so now the minimal travel
kit is
DA 35 macro
DA 15
took these two to Copenhagen for 8 nights recently, checked no baggage, and
was fine with it; desiring a longer lens or wider aperture i might bring
DFA 100 WR Macro or 50-200
A 50/1.7
add a rocket blower and a LensPen, always; bag is usually messenger style
for urban trips, MountainSmith lumbar pack for short hikes; a decent daypack
(meaning one with a real hip belt and adjustable suspension) for longer
hikes, or hikes with monopod
i recently did a short gardening-related trip to Santa Fe by car, and as an
experiment took more gear: 15, 35 macro, 100 macro and DA 50-135 (which to
me is a heavy lens), plus a monopod; but i only used the 15 and the 35
i'm more concerned with backing up images than with a spare body, so i bring
a 64GB iPad Mini (with lots of unused space) and the Lightning to SD card
adapter … load my images daily onto the iPad for backup and review
