Thank you, Bruce. I did the curves thing and may have let off on the +highlight 
slider maybe a bit too soon.
I'd applied 64% raw converter clarify as well as bumping the contrast a 
substantial amount. I'm comfortable
with it for now, but I'm really never finished with these images.

Jack, I find this one an improvement on the first upload. I really
like the subject, but I find it overall still too dark.

Were it mine I would go at it vigorously with a Curves adjustment; I
would lighten the fog considerably, and either let the darks go to
lighter tones, or hold them by increasing the contrast too.
