I must admit that I'm pretty ignorant about the windows world,
particularly the cost of OS upgrades.

I do suspect that people who don't spend the money on upgrading their
system within every six or eight years are also the people who are not
as likely to spend their money upgrading their Adobe products.

Larry, I don't know about the general prices of Windows upgrades either,
as when and if I do that, I use highly discounted software. But it is
not just the monetary value associated with the upgrade. A bigger
problem is the time and effort that goes into that. It could also be a
major pain, especially for those who aren't very computer savvy as many
of us. Even for experienced people, upgrading Windows on a _laptop_ can
be a major project because of the proprietory drivers involved.

And in some cases, one might encounter additional expenses for replacing
other 32-bit software with the 64-bit version.
And that could be for a computer that was bought a few months ago?
(as I wrote in another message, even Win 8.1 comes in a 32-bit version.)

Windows Upgrade to 8.1 is about a hundred bucks, although you might find
a rebate. Another hundred if you want to upgrade from plain vanilla 8.1
to 8.1 Pro.

You can't update 32-bit Windows XP/7/8 to 64-bit Windows 7/8. You have
to do a clean install, so you're going to need a full version if you
want to go from 32-bit to 64-bit.

Shrinkwrap "Widows 7 Professional With Service Pack 1 - 64-bit, License
& Media OEM" is about $130 after rebate from Tiger Direct. Probably
available from NewEgg or other vendors for about the same price.

That's the flavor of Windoze I have on all of my computers except for
the Mac Mini & some obsolete hardware that I'm hanging on to (but not
using) right now.

I use Tiger Direct because they have a local retail store here in
Raleigh and it only takes me about 5 minutes to get there when I need
something.

YMMV
