The new collapsible 18-50mm kin lens.

I keep looking at that lens thinking it's not much bigger than the 43mm
limited, and it would make a great compact walking around lens on a K-5II.

Here's an interesting question, the collapsible Kit lens locks the K-S2
when the lens hasn't been opened to taking position, (firmware driven I
expect), how far back will a firmware fix be supplied? K10D/20D pretty
much not, they didn't add a fix for the 1.4x multiplier, but the K-5IIs
is still current, (at least as far as Ricoh Imaging USA is concerned),
will they even bother to release a firmware update for that camera?

It's really annoying for a company that prides itself on it's product's
backward compatibility to not upgrade still viable product's firmware.
You'd think that it's just marketing hype.
Wow. Talk about first world problems. So we're speculating that owners
of older Pentax cameras *might* be able to mistakenly take a photo
without (this particular one) lens being extended? Oh woe is me!
More like the general lack of support for "older" cameras in general.
Hey it's a third world problem too, Pentax sells big in China if you can
believe the interviews from DB Review and Imaging Resource.
Do you think these older cameras constitute a significant (or even
detectable) percentage of the cameras in use in China? The growth of
sales in China may be the *reason* they aren't concerned about the
lack of backwards compatibility (which is still only speculation at
this point) with this lens.

Well now that we've careened off the track due to my replying with an off hand comment to your off hand comment. Let's get back to the point.

It's a problem of not supporting still viable product, not a specific, lens camera combination sold in a particular part of the world. You made it a "first world problem", it's an all world problem.
