Dan, have you tried just leaving your camera turned on all the time?
That's what I do, and the battery life isn't noticeably impaired. It
goes to sleep after a minute (by default) and sleep mode is pretty
much as power-frugal as Power-Off. One touch on the shutter button and
it comes awake, faster than Power-On.

I power it off only after I wrap up shooting, or to switch lenses or an SD card.
