There are DOS limitations on number of files in a directory in the FAT
depending on the version. I don't remember what they are, however 500
doesn't ring a bell. The only time I know of when a camera
automatically changes the directory is when it rolls over from
XXXX9999.xxx to XXXX0000.xxx. When that happens it creates a new
directory with the new number and stores the images in that new
directory. Both the *.ist D and Ds exhibited that behavior. I expect
it's the same for all later Pentax cameras.

Last night I saw the Red Elvises play in Santa Cruz. It was a very
fun show, and I ended up taking pictures. I loaded them into lightroom
last night, and when I went through them this morning, a whole bunch
were missing. Going back and looking, Lightroom had only read the
ones out of the 100PENTX directory, not the 101PENTX directory.
First of all, this seems to be a bit of a lightroom bug. However, what
causes the camera to change from storing photos in one subdirectory to
another? Is it when I hit 500 photos?
