I agree, except for the clean, free, western style toilet facilities. My wife and I had an experience very similar to yours, only this past May. We stayed at the Marriott City Wall Hotel, so we were able to see quite a bit of the old wall and easily walk to the main train station and the shopping malls across the street from it. It is one thing to recognize, intellectually, that China is a massive country crowded with people. It is something altogether different to experience it, especially at a place like the Beijing train station.
