I agree that Times Square and the Theater District are crowded and noisy and glitzy, but those are not necessarily bad, especially in small doses. It was indeed a frightening place in the late 1960s, the 1970s and the early 1980s, but it is much cleaner and safer now. I do not consider it "scary" in any respect.
Unfortunately, the strip has effected the entire city of Lost Wages and much of the rest of Nevada. Slot machines were everywhere, even in the public restrooms, and the sleaze spills over to many of the larger and mid-sized towns. Utah and Arizona, and especially Wyoming, are much more attractive places to me.
