'Washed out' is exactly the term I was looking for.

I'd try and bring the white point down if you can, pull the black down too and 
give it some mid-range contrast. I generally start by using the colour presets 
- medium contrast, and punch; then I sometimes play with the curves a tiny 
little bit.
