The best way to demystify the various adjustments and settings is to play with
them. There's no downside to it … LR never changes the original file, you can
always click the "Reset" button to return an image to its original, as-imported
state and start over again.

I would play with the presets after poking about with the various adjustments
yourself. All LR presets are basically combinations of the settings you can
make. I only rarely use the provided presets … I've made many of my own. You
can always find out what a particular preset has done in terms of the controls
by opening the preset ".lrtemplate" file with a text editor.

For example, I have a preset that adds a standard amount of vignetting. Opened
with a text editor, the preset reads like this:

s = {
        id = "D7E1B9DA-CAA9-409F-B807-D814DAED09F2",
        internalName = "cosmicar Sq vignetting",
        title = "cosmicar Sq vignetting",
        type = "Develop",
        value = {
                settings = {
                        EnableEffects = true,
                        GrainAmount = 0,
                        GrainFrequency = 50,
                        GrainSize = 25,
                        PostCropVignetteAmount = -25,
                        PostCropVignetteFeather = 76,
                        PostCropVignetteHighlightContrast = 0,
                        PostCropVignetteMidpoint = 25,
                        PostCropVignetteRoundness = -81,
                        PostCropVignetteStyle = 2,
                        ProcessVersion = "6.7",
                },
                uuid = "CCCE1274-F89E-4AC7-9D69-3AF1CB32668A",
        },
        version = 0,
}

So you can see that the Effects panel has been enabled, and various adjustments
have been set. If you apply those settings using the LR UI, , or just import
and apply the preset, you'll see what the preset is doing very clearly.

Don't be afraid to experiment. You can't break any of your photos.
