Usually flash is moved from hot shoe for some milimmeters. If You don't notice that,
contacts for TTL metering are cut

What's worse I was told the TR doesn't accept NiCd? What about NiMH?
Perhaps the info was wrong?

Anyway, you can always rig up a DIY power supply using a cord run tru
hole in your flash's battery door. Or install a new connector from
"radioshack" or whatever in the batterydoor, and from the connector
run wires to a wooden or plastic block fake "batteries" which contact
the flash contacts. Use a lockable connector! From that run a coiled
wire of about 0.5-0.75mm internal dia (metric standard), not less, to
the battery pack you made. Use same number of cells you put into the
flash, just use way bigger sized :) like C or even D cells (if you
have deep pockets there are BIG "F" sized cells which hold up to 10
000 mAh in NiCd version! But cost a LOT). Or use a heavy but full of
power modern Pb battery - but there could be problem with the voltage
difference.

You could even get the battery comp. door from Pentax as a spare part,
so you don't ruin your flash's resale value :)
