I've gotten work through connections made on LinkedIn. It's used quite a bit by the journalism and ad industry types in the U.S. I also use it to check the credentials and background of people I work with, many of whom may be unknown to me. In recent years I rarely come across a photog, writer, artist or marketing exec who is not on LinkedIn. I find it useful, although some of their practices are annoying.
