As for the nature of LinkedIn, - as Paul wrote, - it can be used as an
effective professional networking tool.
One can connect to people (as on Facebook), and that is especially
convenient in the technical industries, where people tend to change their
jobs rather often, so that their work e-mail changes frequently.
It also helps finding people who work at a particular company (especially
if you have a paid account), which is useful when you need to find some
direct contacts at a particular company (e.g. when you are searching for a
job). In some technical disciplines, it is also used as a
tool for short recommendations from colleagues (via "endorsements").
And of course, as with any tool, any of these features can be abused.
As a networking tool, it should be used thoughtfully.
But no, one shouldn't expect manna falling from LinkedIn. :-)
Cheers,
Igor

I've gotten work through connections made on LinkedIn. It's used quite a
bit by the journalism and ad industry types in the U.S. I also use it to
check the credentials and background of people I work with, many of whom
may be unknown to me. In recent years I rarely come across a photog,
writer, artist or marketing exec who is not on LinkedIn. I find it useful,
although some of their practices are annoying.

Correction - it's LinkedIn without a dash.
It's not just one PDML list member. I've received multiple invites on
multiple occasions to join LinkedIn from multiple list members.
I don't think the list members are sending them intentionally, but the
SPAM does appear to come from the list members' LinkedIn accounts.
Anyone who is a member of LinkedIn, please check your account settings.
I've had no end of these darn e-mails. I've spoken to a couple of people
who've (supposedly) sent them, and they have no idea how regularly or how
many of these messages are sent. The one thing I did ask was how they
benefitted from membership, and no one has told me anything positive; it's
usually being sent other membership requests!

I joined, for what ever reason , several years ago. I have been tagged
as "transportation specialist" i suppose cause i drive a school bus. I
get job postings for Transportation managers but thats about it.
