I joined LinkedIn something like 15 years ago, back when it was a useful place to find people in the Software Engineering field. It helped me to keep track of people I had worked with, and even to track down several folks I'd lost contact with (people I worked with in the '80s). In those days it provided a useful service, without the endless flood of emails about how many times somebody has viwed yor profile, or the "requests to join your professional network" from people you've never heard of (with, I note, one or two from names I recognise from here).
