Audacity on Windows allows to create a "chain", - essentially a script
of actions, and then to apply to a set of files. So, it is a "batch" conversion.

In my program, I have a chain MP3 Conversion (it may have come with the program, or maybe I've created it). It contains 3 lines:
"Normalize"
"ExportMP3"
"END"
(So to see how easy it is.)

In many programs "LAME" codec has to be installed separately. IIRC, that is because of the license limitations. (I.e., LAME library cannot be distributed with the software.)

I don't know how it works on a Mac, I suspect it is probably the same.

Igor

I think the first reply to a similar question in 2012 looks like the
simplest, if it still applies to today's version of iTunes:

Audacity can only convert to mp3 if you install a separate LAME
plug-in and it would probably limit you to doing one song at time.

Take a look at a freeware program called Audacity.

Seeking the group's cyber-wisdom again:

I have several gigs of music in Apple lossless format on my laptop and
iPhone.

I would like to convert them to mp3 to export them to a relative's
Sandisk
player, while not mixing them with the originals.

There is a convoluted and poorly-described procedure on the Apple web
site. Can anyone recommend a simple way or utility to do this?
