Seeking the group's cyber-wisdom again:

I have several gigs of music in Apple lossless format on my laptop and
iPhone.

This is what is confusing me. To the best of my knowledge Apple does not
offer a lossless format. Has that changed?

as Matthew noted, yes that changed something like a decade ago, Apple Lossless (ALC) is one of the formats that can be stored in the .m4a container (i mention that because some sources define .m4a as using lossy compression); a few years ago i converted my whole CD library to ALC and never looked back

beyond just iTunes, ALC is handy because it is used to *losslessly* stream audio among various Apple devices (Airplay); it's also open source, so one can reasonable assume that ALC files will be decodable for years to come

i have similar misgivings about iTunes as Godfrey, but for all its issues, it is the core of one heck of a well-integrated system

I don't think iTunes will even play flac files.

not by default, but by adding a QuickTime Component one can shoehorn it into iTunes; i used to use Xiph to get iTunes to play ogg-vorbis, back when that seemed to be the format of the future, and Xiph also works for FLAC, however i found it more convenient to use XLD (as mentioned in elsewhere in thread) to convert FLAC to ALC, because then you get track names, etc., in iTunes and can use it across the whole system
