Nope. No focus by wire.  It's old school, at least as old school as an
auto focus lens can be.  To override auto focus you must disengage the
lens from the screw drive by switching off AF on the body.  The one I

doesn't bother me since I don't shoot video, but it is noticeable, and

Yes, just like an old fashioned manual focus lens. It's nicely damped for an early design auto focus lens as well.
