I don't know that much about Macs but on Windows the you only need about twice as much paging file as actual physical memory, and if you're hard drive which you seem to have. But if your drive is fragmented then even with enough paging file, it can slow down the system when more paging space is allocated. I don't know if disk defragmenting is a thing with a Mac, but if it I'd try that first.
