Yes you can just convert pef to dng with the dng converter. Or you can
shoot DNG and just open the raw. Do note that the K-1 has a bunch of
advanced features that the older camera raw does not support like
multiple area white balance. In the latest lightroom, it works with
the K-3 or at least it doesn't shift to green anymore. Lightroom also
has the latest adobe profile for the K-1 where the older camera raw
you are stuck with just embedded. I use embedded usually myself, so
maybe that's not a big deal. Skin tones can be better sometimes under
adobe's profile though.

Right now there is a deal for $8 a month for lightroom and photoshop
CC. Not a bad deal really. Then again if you are running a computer
that still has CS6 it might be time to upgrade. My older i5 laptop
struggles with k-3 files even.
