Makes me think of the strategy used on the lower cost digital printers where
the cost of ink over time is vastly more expensive the the initial cost of
the printer.

The capsules themselves are often made completely from recyclable
material, so
that side is of lesser concern - assuming they stay in the cycle. Of
greater
concern is the environmental cost of machine production and the oxygen
wasted by
the people who promote these devices.
WRT cost of product, I once overheard sopmeone in a supermarket espousing
the
chapness of the capsules they had found. Examining the product during an
overwhelming burst of curiosity, I found thy were paying over £11 for 100g
of
coffee. Sad, sad people.

Coffee capsules are an environmental disaster. The whole thing is a

example of wasteful production and unnecessary technology designed simply
to
screw more money out of the consumer by selling them useless crap.
