It does take some patience...If I remember correctly I used a straight
paper clip and one with a small "L" bent on the end as tools and was
able to maneuver the piece(s) around so when I tipped the camera they
were able to fall out.

bottom of the card slot for bits of plastic. I found pieces in the slot that
appeared to look like they were from a damaged SD card, although I could never
identify which one. I managed to fish the pieces out and the latch has worked
properly since.
good call, unfortunately the contacts act like barbs to keep the piece in.
