Canon will, in all likelihood drop the EF mount entirely in favor of the RF

way Pentax forced M42 users into adapters with the K mount, and probably
forcing users to buy new lenses to get full functionality.
Or, even more like they way they dropped the FD mount when they went auto focus.
The RF mount is pretty much a short registration distance EF mount.
Canon did a very good job with the EF mount as it has been a very future
proof design.
FWIW, the KAF4 mount has moved in that direction, with a completely
electrical interface between camera and lens. I don't think it will be
quite as reliable as the EF mount.
The adapter will be easy, I think they already have one, unlike adapting
the FD mount to the EF mount, which required an optical adapter.
You could adapt them, but it suddenly put a Coke bottle between the lens
and the film.
Of course, they can drop support via firmware, with future RF bodies
refusing to talk to EF lenses, but I think that might be a bridge too
far, even for them.
