Their last what could be called budget lenses date from 2016 with the
DFA 28-105 and DFA55-300.
Pentax doesn't have to play the go big or go home game that seems to
rule American led capitalism. All they have to do is stay in their
niche, let the big boys punch each other in their faces and catch
their abandoned customers as they walk away from the hamster wheels
they have been on for the past 35 years.

DA 55-300 PLM you mean. I have just ordered one.
I had to return a recently bought second hand DA 550-300 WR to the shop
in view of poor sharpness that I couldn't correct in-camera.
Hopefully I will have more luck with the PLM version though I can't use
it on the K-5.
I have no interest in most limited lenses (too much trouble changing in
the field) and I own only the DA 21 that I'm very rarely using.
So if this is the only route Pentax Ricoh is following on lenses there
will be not much left to choose from.
And there will be no alternative Tamrons and Sigmas but only the manual
third party lenses around.
This and the fact that the choice of camera models is steadily reducing
when the KP is gone, makes it more and more attractive for Pentax users
to step out of the hamster wheels.
However, it would not surprise me if a follow-up of the K70 with flip
screen(!) and some of the improvements of the K3 3 will suddenly appear
on the market.
