At least from the pictures (alas, I never held this lens, as I am not Fred <g>), it seems a more logical approach than the one with zoom ring closer to body. After all, you change focal length less times than you focus, therefore, resting your hand under the body, you can do both focus change and aperture change, while zooms stays same.
