Sorry for butting in here, but do you agree that he has grounds to be
upset with Nikon? My thoughts run: he knew when he bought the D100 that
it was built like a cross between an F80 and an F100, with a closer
resemblance to the F80 than anything else. Neither of those film cameras
is water-resistant, and the D100 has never claimed to be water-resistant.
So why is he surprised that it was harmed by getting wet? That's like
splashing your MZ body and wondering why it got damaged... they're just
not protected against that and have never claimed to be.

I dunno... I can see why he'd be upset that he's not getting a better
camera for his money, but Nikon has never claimed that the D100 was
water-resistant, so I'm not sure why they should repair it under warranty.
That's just how electronics are... unless they explicitly specify
weather-resistance, it's never a good idea to get them wet. If someone
wants a body that's water-resistant, they're going to have to cough up the
dough for a better DSLR and not complain because their entry-level one
couldn't cut it.

I'm not trying to dump on your friend at all, since I have no idea how
much water actually came into contact with the camera and how he used it.
As a salesgeek, though, I see my fair share of people who do things with
cameras that the cameras were never meant to do, and most seem to expect
that abuse should fall under the warranty. At the same time, I reserve my
right to be pissed off that the red plastic panel on my 500FTZ flash broke
after the flash was knocked off a box and fell less than two feet onto
carpet while in its Pentax-supplied soft case.
