Actually the sensor is far from being exposed: the shutter curtain rests 
in front of the sensor, just as it does on a film SLR, and the mirror 
rests in the down position.

However, I know a UK pap(arazzo) who shoots with 1D's and he avoids 
changing lenses in windy conditions outside of his car.

If you are saying that the mating surfaces of the body/lens area is an 
issue with what? Water? That could well be something to watch out for.
