Dave, I used to find that I had to release the pressure plate in the negative carrier slightly when moving the negatives along to reduce the possibility of scratching them. No matter how smooth the surfaces, there would always seem to be a little bit of grit somewhere! For small scratches, try this old trick - rub your finger on the side of your nose, then onto the neg you're printing; fills the scratches with nose grease!
