It's simple: lift the film by the edges and position it in the carrier.
Nothing comes in contact with the emulsion. Nothing can scratch it.

drop the top of the carrier because you didn't hold it well enough.
negative isn't necessarily positioned right then. pull out of the sleeve
and something has gotten onto the sleeve. all these have happened. the
better the negative or slide, the more often you print with it and the more
often it is exposed to damage. nothing properly treated should damage any
negative, but as i said earlier, accidents happen.
