If one were to look at pictures in a magazine like Sports Illustrated from before the high speed AF era, they would see that the pictures look very different. Many more were shot with shorter focal length lenses ans smaller apertures for greater DOF. It is just not possible to consistently get pictures in focus with a 400mm lens shot at f2.8. Can you get great sport pictures with MF gear? Yes. Can you work at, or near the top of the profession with MF gear? No. If you like that 1965 look, then Pentax was, and is, your ticket.
