A couple of years ago, I spent some time trying out quite a few
different shareware and demoware file managers. (I have ~always~
been annoyed at some of Explorer's "features", and I was getting
tired of trying to get my old Win 95 Norton File Manager (of which I
loved the interface) to work with any stability on Win 98 (since
Symantec stopped further development on their Norton File Manager
after the Win 95 version). [I was more successful getting the old
Win NT 3.51 version of Norton File Manager to run on Win NT 4.0 and
even on Win 2K, but that's another story...] Well, I finally
settled on Powerdesk Pro 4.0 as my choice, and registered it. It
was the closest product to my beloved Norton File Manager, and it
has added several additional features, too. It's not perfect, but I
have never regretted sticking with it since making it my default
file manager (although I haven't tried it as a shell replacement).
I've since upgraded to Powerdesk Pro 5.0, which has a few additional
features, but there really was nothing wrong with 4.0. I have
successfully used Powerdesk on Win NT 4.0, Win 2K Pro, Win 98, Win
Me, Win XP Home, and Win XP Pro. Well, that's my story, and I'm
stickin' with it...
