I don't know what the issue is. I just read from other people on the mailing list for the product that they can't get it to work.
Often this means that the package in Portage is not working the way install-from-source users might expect. It's not uncommon for complex packages to be set up in a particular (not necessarily standard) way.
I'd check with the Gentoo forums as the definitive guide to what does and doesn't work on Gentoo.
Out of curiosity... what's the product?
