One problem with creating it as lines is if, for example, I need to flip a
component by pressing 'X' or 'Y' (i.e. swap op-amp +/- positions). 
Then the text would be mirrored.

Of course, you can always create the text as lines (yes, very cumbersome)
but it will then always stay put relative to the part.  This won't work 
if it
is a part comment or designator, of course.  But, if you want a pin 1 mark
or some similar orientation mark, this would work.
