My PowerPCB is version 5.2, and the ascii files I export indicate they are
version 5.0. I don't have any additional "save" and "export" options.

For the PADs PowerPCB files, you save them from PADs in 3.5 format Ascii. They
will then import into DXP 2002 SP2 or higher, quite well.
Sorry the rest I can't help you on.

I need to translate a few Mentor schematics (Viewlogic) and PADS PowerPCB PCB
files to Protel 2004. Can anyone on the forum suggest an economical means of
doing so?

I have access to both the Mentor and PowerPCB software, but any files, even the
Pads ascii files I export from them are not recognizable by Protel 2004
