Yeah, how about that? At one time Protel was affordable to you, but since then it has been "gentrified" out of your price range. I think this gentrification phenomena is one reason for the Free Software movement. In case anyone is interested, here are some links to gEDA:

There was also a hands-on article about gEDA in March 2005 of Circuit Cellar Ink magazine.

If you already have Protel and it does what you want, stick with it. But if you need more "seats" and cannot afford Protel, you may want to explore alternatives such as gEDA. And if you like Protel, want/need to upgrade, and have the money, buy Protel. Something for everyone, hopefully.

Disclaimer: I have not tried gEDA. I cannot vouch for it's suitability for any particular purpose. Your mileage may vary. Yada, yada, etc.

Hello all,
This price is interesting. I was quoted a price of $5495 in April (P99SE to P2004). The Altium guy added that he'd have to consult with his manager to finalize the price. To me, this is evidence of car lot mentality. It gives me motivation to identify alternatives.

In truth, Altium's current offerings are priced well outside my price range. I'll stick with P99SE for the foreseeable future because it meets my needs.

Steve
