I kind-of like the concept that anytime a buyer tries to negotiate the price their name is written down and the price goes up 5%. It sure saves a lot of time.

Wow, left field there AJ.

It's akin to buying a car from a dealership and I might be a pushover and
you might be a shark. I would pay full retail because I didn't think to ask
for a discount and you might play the "I'm walking outta here unless you
give me 15% off right now!" The price would be different for each of us
correct???? The dealer might say "AJ, you got your price, but don't be
spreading it all over town..." It has nothing to do with discrimination, but
rather trying to close a deal.

No, no medication, nor any required. (Aside from Advil, which is a true
godsend)

The point was that when you buy a single package, when I buy a single
package, when Joe Blow buys a single package, aside from cost changes
dictated by irresolvable issues like disparities in government taxation and
perhaps shipping, the price should be virtually identical, not dictated by
your or my (or Joe Blow's) personal relationship to Altium, whether
positive, as might be the case if one were a stooly for the company, or
negative, if one were a detractor of the more tasteless engagements of the
company's sales force and executive management. (Or whether one is a good or
bad schmoozer with salespeople for that matter)

It's one thing if you or I are purchasing in quantity, because then
discounting is rational. Personally, I doubt that's what the original author
was implying with his "Mum's the word" post...

Any other activity by said company can easily and correctly (IMO) be
compared with any other form of discrimination, especially those that are of
the "distasteful" variety.

I find the substantive content of your email to be quite offensive.
Pricing for a publicly traded commodity like software should not be
under almost any circumstances a "unique circumstance", ie, some folks
get better pricing and superior service because they are of a certain
skin color, religion, philosophical bent, national origin, etc. This
attitude, so publicly displayed by certain individuals on this list
over the years, along with their most certain support for price
increases (not that they're subject to them, of course...) is exactly
why I stopped bleeding myself for upgrades of questionable value from
Protel's corporate holding company, aka, the milkmen. The more of us
who avoid support of that kind of a system, the less likely it is to be
successful in its actual purpose, which is not the creation of better
software, but the fiscal support for bon-bon eaters and their spawn
planetwide.

Don't forget you are expressing all this on a public forum.....

You are playing poker with your cards up on the table......

You need to express your concerns 1-on-1, not publicly like this....

Software EDA has become so competitive that everyone gets a unique
price which they are asked NOT to reveal to anyone......

I experienced this with 2 EDA vendors directly......

Mira,
I forgot to have them book my seats when they called, I
hope there are
window seats, not over the wing still available. 8^>

I had wondered about the motivation and rigidity of the
details as
well. To some degree I am sure you are right. I didn't put a lot of
faith in it initially, not until they backed up their telephone
comments in a written announcement email with written quotes attached
(both pre and post this mysterious date) with all the details
outlined.

Seems the email is being sent individually by the sales
reps since it
doesn't appear to be a mass mailing. That and the fact it had the
quotes attached.

I have to say that there is a possibility that we will
upgrade. I have
looked at our future roadmap for a while now and don't really
see other
plausible options for price verses performance. The recent about-face
from Altium regarding support would be grain of sand that toppled the
scale.
Without that visible effort to support DXP PCB & SCH tools I
would walk
in a moment regardless. I don't need to fight for support while
fighting to learn and use the tool.

Whether or not we upgrade now, that is in the hands of
others who may
be very much tougher to convince or to open the purse strings at this
moment. You know the deal, it may be possible but the timing is poor
and it was definitely not a budgeted item. Would have been
nice to have
been able to include it in a budget, obviously Altium doesn't
consider
such capital budget items when developing and implementing their
policies. Or they would realize that their customers go through the
same processes for large capital expenditures. Duh!

Brad,

Altium is checking as how many of you would upgrade if the
price jumps
up.
Did they offer a round trip to Australia for two together with the
upgrade? Or maybe they forgot to tell you that the price was
included...

Mira
