I use common libs, but create a project lib at relevant points for
maintaining project history complete.

That's what I do.

It's probably not that common among hardware developers, but a source code
repository (version control system) can be very valuable for hardware work,
too. Such a VCS usually doesn't work well with the Access-based ddb files,
but it works quite well with the file system-based storage. 

This and/or a good and reliable backup routine are necessary anyway, IMO,
and with either you shouldn't have to worry too much about file corruption
-- you always have the last revision to go back to, and it shouldn't be far
in the past.
