I've been using Protel since version 2.8 and am now up
to 2004 SP4.

Not that I'm a big fan of the way Altium has handled
upgrades either but I'm happy with 2004. I've
developed several boards with it so far.

2004 has greatly reduced the memory leak problems of
previous versions. Not fixed it, but greatly improved
it.

It doesn't crash near as often as prior versions did.

I haven't had a PCB file corrupted yet ( unlike 98 /
99 ).

The autorouter is still horrible. But Specctra fixes
that.

I'm also a licenced Pads user. I prefer Protel.

I understand their desire to chase the FPGA arena. I
just wish they would put their resources into the PCB
product instead. I am happy to have the schematic and
PCB libraries for FPGAs but will continue to use other
tools for FPGA netlist development.
