yeah over in the forum they couldn't reproduce this either

i have been banging my head on it

at least 2 machines are the same, it used to work!

not sure what to do as i really need this

i use a light color for top layer so that designators which don't fit 
will print on top of filled in pads, it has been great for that

i have an instinct there must be some program or software common to all 
this that is effecting the color selection

BTW, the color selector does work in PCB Options Display
