I've heard of the "cse Linux Font Editor"
http://dt.prohosting.com/hacks/cse.html
.
Please tell me if you know of any other free font editors.

I am interested in fonts that are specifically designed to be fast-to-read.
Unfortunately, is difficult to compare if one font is better than
another, just by reading a couple of sentences.
Any font significantly different than the fonts you have spent years
training your eyes on ( "Helvetica", "Times Roman", etc.) will
initially be slow to read, even if it would turn out to be faster to
read after you practiced a few months with it.
"Ten Word Line"
http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?TenWordLine
has a few other ideas for making text fast-to-read.

If you like adding little serifs and slashes to distinguish
easily-confused letters, you might be interested in UNIFON which adds
serifs and slashes to distinguish between different sounds.

(I write a "4" open at the top, to make it more distinct from "9").
