I agree.
The representations could be considered to be physical, but are categories physical?
The categories designated by the words 'letter' and 'phoneme' are types. I admit that the syntax of my phrase "The original mark (such as a representation of an icon or a mixture of letters or phonemes)" is ambiguous. I intended the phrase 'representation of' to be distributed across the 'or'. To be precise, I should have written "The original mark (such as a representation of an icon or a representation of a mixture of letters or phonemes)" But the use of plurals in "letters or phonemes" would also give a preference for instances. For example, when somebody says "Dogs are physical", the word "Dogs" would normally be interpreted as a reference to instances. John
