'Post-scientific' is a better characterization than unscientific – methinks. What Peirce et al are after is a More General Theory that can account for the inherently limited success of various material or mechanical theories as special cases.

Although commonly misinterpreted by a 20th Century bias, "Reductionism" does not actually refer to reduction to "materialism," the view that our understanding of the physical world is complete in all important respects. As Penrose has pointed out repeatedly over the past two decades and more, it clearly is not. Further, such a point of view is not scientific. I think that Peirce would have agreed. Logical reductionism can be rescued if this is made clear.
