Have you read "Empire", Tom? Do you think that because it uses the word
"subsumption" that it qualifies to be mentioned in the same breath as V. 1
of Capital? I realize that the coverleaf of the book describes it as a
Communist Manifesto for the 21st century but that does not make it so. In
any case, as I will demonstrate in a four part critique of "Empire" (there
are four parts to the book)--the first one appearing this weekend--there is
very little of the Marxist method in the book. I can tell you specifically
that one of the key issues I will deal with in the first part is how
Hardt-Negri's understanding of the United Nations as an embodiment of
"Kantian" ideas misses the whole point. Before the United Nations was born,
it existed as the wartime alliance between the US, the UK and the USSR.
Unless you take such institutions and apply a historical materialist
analysis, you are talking through your hat.
