Lou knows my take on this & has referred to it before.  Part of what Marx was 
doing 
was attacking Henry Carey, who was his rival for influence at the New York 
Tribune.  
Carey believed that all the ills in the world came from England.  Marx was 
saying 
that this constituted his hidden war against Carey.
