I like Carrol's take on our predicament very much. The gloominess 
and pessimism aren't overstated -- these are dire times we live 
in. But maybe from a certain kind of perspective -- always 
justified, but never universally shared -- all times are dire 
times. 

So how do you not "throw your life away"? Telling the truth 
might be a good start. In season and out of season, as the man 
says.
