But it is precisely because I think there is no left movement worthy of
the name that I argue as I do. There is no Left in the U.S. but there
are 10s of thousands of leftists. Not enough to have any influence
whatever on electoral politics, but enough that if they could somehow
get roughly together in a loose coalition* they could do the kind of
work I propose (but _still_ would not be able to have any electoral
effect).

So the task of us scattered leftists is to give our thought and energy
to building fragments of a foundation for such a loose coalition, mostly
(now) in the form of local groups of various sorts. Daydreaming about
electoral impact or fussing about Obama one way or another is a
distraction.

*I say "loose coalition" because I do not think there will ever be a
single revolutionary party in the united states; whatever form a
movement takes, it will more resemble the "fronts" formed in Central
American movements in the '70s and '80s than either the 2d or3d
international parties. (Resemble -- not be modelled on. Models don't
carry over borders.)
