There's a fine line between expectation and desire. Sometimes, when
people have been disappointed too many times, they come to secretly
desire that they will continue to be "disappointed" -- except that
next time the disappointment will come as fulfillment because they
didn't really expect anything better. "Damn! I knew it was going to
happen." It IS like being stuck in a Samuel Beckett play. But admit
that in a Beckett play the characters are very much authors of their
own absurd non-destinies.
